Ever wondered who composed the national anthem? Here you they are
The national anthem is a unifying factor in a country and is popularly sang during national holidays, in schools and whenever raising the country's flag. It is a sacred dong to citizens as it reminds them of their freedom.
The Kenya national anthem was crafted by a commission of five people who included music composers and musicians. The commission included Prof Washington Omondi, rev. Thomas Kalume who was an education officer, Graham Hyslop who was the inspector of music in the ministry of education, Mr Peter Kibkosya who was a music tutor and George Senoga Zake a Ugandan musicologist.
The team was given seven weeks to compose the national anthem and in the process they found one Kenyan who found a tune and the tune was so amazing that whenever it played everyone was pleased. It was then presented to the band master of Kenya police.
Many traditional tunes were considered but they shortlisted only 3 tunes from which the pokomo lullaby was selected. The committee went forward and came up with the theme words in both English and Kiswahili.
They also agreed that the opening stanzas be prayerful. The anthem was presented to president Jomo Kenyatta in August 1963. It was since then that the National anthem was sang.
